The Haven
The Haven is a separate resort of 62 water bungalows off the island of Lankanfinolhu. The resort on the island itself is Paradise Island.
It's unusual in the Maldives to find two different resorts on one island; one branded as a glossy new five star, its older sister firmly established in the 'affordable' category. It remains to be seen how successful this 'young upstart' will be but it appears that the 'two resorts, one island' concept is actually working so far.
The new resort has its own restaurant and reception but many of the other facilities are shared with Paradise Island. That is, the spa, the dive school, the bars and speciality restaurants, the water sports and all the other recreations and excursions. Paradise Island guests, however, can't use The Haven's facilities (bar those staying in the top room category, who can use the restaurant). That said, most of the Paradise Island guests don't seem too concerned about not being able to visit The Haven, having plenty to occupy them on land, while the water villa guests seem content enough staying in their plush villas, for the most part.
The rooms come in four categories: Water Villas, Haven Villas, Haven Suites and Ocean Suites. Built only a few years ago, they are pretty sleek inside and out. Overall, the interiors are contemporary, with high ceilings, large living areas and modern hardwood. The colour scheme is neutral tones with a splash of red here and there. A few quality features such the glossy wooden furniture contribute to the sophisticated look, and there's Wifi throughout.
All the villas have direct access to the lagoon via their private sun terraces. These terraces have a higher level of privacy than many others of their kind, having walls separating you from the neighbours on both sides (one solid stone, one made from wooden slats you can look through from the inside). The lagoon's a bit stoney but is very shallow and calm, and as such is a beautiful pale aqua colour.
The Haven Suites enjoy the premium positions on the end of the jetty. Apart from their larger size, the other special features of the Haven Suites include four rooms (a total capcity of 16 people) and a large indoor and outdoor bathroom with steam room. The sun deck contains a jacuzzi and a plunge pool. The Ocean Suites are larger but have only two rooms (and a capacity of up to 12). They include no less than two jacuzzis and a long swimming pool on the sun terrace, but no steam room.
The over-water restaurant commands beautiful views across the lagoon and is only available for use by guests staying at The Haven or in Paradise Island's Superior Beach Villas. A second a la carte restaurant overlooking the breaking waves on the open ocean side of The Haven is opening shortly, and will operate on the same basis.
The former manager, Shujau, was an integral part of running Paradise Island for many years and was much loved. His shoes have been filled by a dynamic young manager who appears to be keeping the resorts ticking over merrily.
The location is an advantage, being just 20 minutes by speedboat from the airport.
