Hilton
Hilton Maldives/Iru Fushi Resort & Spa
Hilton Hotels have taken over the management of Irufushi and it is closed until July 2009 in order to convert it to their standard and requirements.
It looks to be a fine island for them to work their magic on. The beach is uninterrupted, the lagoon is a good size for swimming and for snorkelling access.
One thing that will certainly get more attention is the vegetation. The original island has no palm trees, the Irufushi resort has a few around a third of the perimeter and, going by the significant alterations made to Rangali island for the Conrad resort, there will be many more palms trees by the time the Hilton opens.
Irufushi had 180 rooms and the Hilton surprisingly will have 220, which seems a lot to me on what is only a medium-sized island. A portion of these will be in the lagoon, off two separate water bungalow jetties. Of course, they will have beautiful interior design, as Hilton continue to successfully expand their resort brand, now entirely distinct from their city hotel brand.
There will be four restaurants and a 'selection of distinctive bars'. The spa will feature 21 private spa pavilions and be complimented by a swimming pool, fitness centre, tennis courts and a range of water sports.
Noonu atoll is a 45 minute seaplane journey from the airport. It is, at this point, pretty much unexplored, so there should be some exciting dives around and the chance to visit untainted islands, both inhabited and uninhabited.
