Giravaru
The resort closed in 2010 and is expected to re-open at the start of 2013 as part of the Centara group.
Currently the island is unrecognisable from the budget resort it once was, as it is in the process of being completely broken down as part of a total refurbishment and re-branding project.
It will re-open in January 2013 with a completely new look and feel. The Thai hotel group, Centara, is currently overseeing the transformation and will take on the management of the new property.
The new Centara resort, the company's second in the Maldives, will have 30 land villas and 90 water villas, and will be somewhere between a four star and five star resort.
The proximity to the airport is in its favour but it has a headache in dealing with the sight of the growing ‘rubbish island’ between Male and itself. This should be successfully dealt with by building most of the rooms as water bungalows behind the island and looking out to sea.
The island itself is nicely positioned at the edge of its own circular reef, with a fine lagoon, good snorkelling and easy access to many, well-established, dive spots.
